Steps for clearing up algae:
- Run the pool pump 24 hours a day while fighting the algae problem.
- Add FROG Pool Tender Algaecide™ dose (see product label) for your size pool.
- After 24 hours, use a chlorine shock to raise the free chlorine level to at least 3-5 ppm.
- Make sure the pH stays balanced in a slightly tighter range between 7.2 and 7.6. Here is a helpful guide for getting Total Alkalinity, pH and Total Hardness in the ideal ranges.
- Brush and vacuum the algae off of the surfaces at least twice a day.
- Clean or backwash the filter of dead bacteria each time you brush or vacuum.
- Continue this process until water clarity returns
Ways to prevent algae in the future:
- Maintain the proper pH range of 7.2-7.8 at all times. Here is a helpful guide for getting Total Alkalinity, pH and Total Hardness in the ideal ranges.
- Make sure to replace your Chlorine Chamber so you always maintain 0.5-1.0 ppm of chlorine.
- Check your pump, skimmer or filter for blockages regularly and clean or backwash the filter.
- Try to keep organic matter like leaves and bugs out of the pool.
- Always shock at least every other week and after higher than usual usage or heavy rains.
- Avoid the use of fertilizers near the pool as this is food for algae.
- Use FROG Pool Tender Algaecide 90-day protection
Check the expiration date on your test strips or kit. Most test strips and testing reagents last only 12 to 18 months. After that date, they may not register readings properly. In addition if you are putting wet hands into the test strip container, you could be contaminating the strips which will shorten their life even further.
