What is SmartChlor® Technology?
FROG® @ease® uses SmartChlor Technology. It’s smart because it’s a unique, time-released chlorine that knows when there is a demand on the swim spa water and automatically delivers the sanitizing power to meet that demand. That means it knows what level of sanitizer is needed and delivers it automatically.
It’s different because SmartChlor does what no other chlorine can: it maintains a consistent free chlorine level of only 0.5 – 1.0 ppm. That’s far less than the industry recommended 1.0 – 3.0 ppm. And less chlorine means water feels softer water, has far less odors, swimsuits don’t fade, and surfaces are protected.
Until now, no complete sanitizing systems for swim spas existed.
You’ve had to use sanitizers made for hot tubs or pools, neither of which sanitize a swim spa properly.
Swim spas have a unique water volume — larger than hot tubs and smaller than pools — and water temperatures that span both hot tub and pool water temperatures. Now, a complete system purpose-built for swim spas means swim spa water can be effectively, efficiently, and expertly sanitized — in a much easier way.
How does SmartChlor® Technology Simplify Swim Spa Maintenance?
1. Self-Regulating
SmartChlor is a game changer for swim spa owners. What’s its secret? It’s self-regulating! That means it maintains the perfect balance of chlorine in your water at all times. No more constant adjustments for chlorine are needed.
As the chart below shows, when you use FROG @ease, it creates a chlorine reserve in the water that converts to free chlorine when it senses demand for the swim spa water.
If you use dichlor, its free chlorine level drops significantly under demand, requiring you to shock – add more dichlor – to bring the chlorine level back to where it’s properly sanitizing the water.
SmartChlor releases the right amount of sanitizer based on demand – it self-regulates. For example, if you’ve used the swim spa and the chlorine level dips, it releases more. However, if the water has a 0.5 – 1.0 ppm level of chlorine, it doesn’t add any more chlorine.
This self-regulation keeps your water consistently Cleaner, Clearer and Softer without any extra effort from you.
2. Reduces Chlorine use up to 75%*
One of the biggest benefits of FROG @ease is that it reduces chlorine use up to 75%*. That’s far less than the industry recommended levels of 1.0 to 3.0 ppm.
Another is that FROG @ease kills bacteria 2 ways, with a low amount of chlorine and FROG Minerals, plus the Minerals condition the water for softness, help keep pH balanced and absorb acids.
Less chlorine means water feels softer and less harsh on skin and hair, swimsuits don’t fade, and surfaces are protected. Spending time in the swim spa is simply more pleasant.
3. Easier on Surfaces with No Odors
Chlorine is a harsh chemical; it kills things. High chlorine levels can also corrode and degrade the swim spa’s surfaces. Therefore, it’s a simple fact that if you use less chlorine, it lessens the corrosion.
Plus, odors are reduced. That, too, starts with maintaining a lower free chlorine level of 0.5 – 1.0 ppm.
Keep in mind that swim spas using dichlor require 1.0 – 3.0 ppm of free chlorine.
If you smell the strong smell of chlorine, what you’re really smelling is chloramines. They form when chlorine reacts with ammonia from the sweat, urine and oils of swim spa users. Chloramines are odor causing agents that require shocking to remove.
SmartChlor’s unique properties combined with FROG Minerals reduce chloramine formation, and therefore, odors are reduced.
Instead, SmartChlor provides a pleasant, odor free environment, enhancing your overall swim spa experience.
4. No Cyanuric Acid
SmartChlor contains no cyanuric acid (CYA). Why is this important? The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) does not recommend using chlorine with Cyanuric Acid in swim spas.1
CYA is a stabilizer; it’s added to chlorine to prevent UV rays from breaking down chlorine. However, swim spas are covered when not in use and protected from much of the sun’s UV rays.
Plus, CYA builds up in the water. If you use dichlor, which contains 50% CYA, every time you add dichlor, you’re adding more CYA into the water. And CYA builds up quickly in the smaller water volumes of swim spas, leading to cloudy, irritating and smelly water. It’s not long before the swim spa water must be drained and refilled. SmartChlor contains no CYA – so eliminates this issue.

Testing the water is super easy. Dip the FROG @ease Test strip into the water and hold it next to the bottle. If the strip appears darker than the Out Indicator, everything is functioning correctly; if it looks lighter, the SmartChlor Cartridge needs to be replaced.
